We have a Facebook page!

I look forward to meeting some of you at the GenSC Carnival.  I will have handouts about the class for you.  Also, I will need to get everyone's email address and lab coat size (think adult shirt sizes).

Devotionals

If students do not currently have a daily devotional, I suggest they get in the practice of reading the Proverb of the Day.  They can mix it up by reading different translations or including The Message.  I know many consider The Message more of a paraphrase, but it does make for easy reading.  There are websites and apps available, too.  Here are some example links:

Bible Passage

Our class Bible Passage for the year comes from Proverbs 24:3-4 NKJV:

Through wisdom a house is built,
And by understanding it is established;
By knowledge the rooms are filled
With all precious and pleasant riches.

No, your child doesn't have to memorize this verse!  We will use it enough in class that they will learn it along the way.

Summer School

Over the summer, students should view the two videos at the bottom of our page.  They are Habit Patterns (1954) and How to Study (1946).  These are examples of the many films students will view during the year.

It would be a good idea for students to learn or review measurements such as capacity, length, and weight.

Note Taking

One of my main objectives for this course will be to help the students learn to take notes.  They will complete a weekly film log with note taking for each film.  They will also complete handouts in class for the workshop presentation.  Students do not have to stick to traditional outline form and I encourage you to check out SketchNotes.  This is a form of note taking that incorporates drawing.  See If You Want Total Recall about how pen and paper are still the best way to take notes.

Homework

Junior High and High School Students not pursing credit - anticipate minimally 30-45 minutes of homework each week.

High School Students - you will need to complete at least 1/2 of a curriculum in addition to the workshops if you want a full credit for Home Ec.

Each week, students will turn in their film log and take a brief vocabulary quiz.  These scores WILL BE POSTED on a chart in the hall.  This is for accountability.  They get a sticker for the film log as long as they do it.  Vocabulary quizzes are only 10-15 words and there is a lot of grace in the grading:

Miss 0-2, A
Miss 3-4, B
Miss 5-6, C
Miss 7 or more, Retake!

If students do not complete the assigned work, I will be contacting parents.  I had a math teacher my senior year of high school who told us that even if we were 18, our parents were paying for us to be there.  If we didn't do our homework, she would call our parents.  And you know what?  It worked.  Students will not waste my time or your money.  I truly believe that Home Economics is one of the most important subjects ANY student can take!
